What is ThermoMite™?

ThermoMite™ is a new and innovative thermotherapy method, utilising Phase Change Materials (PCM) as the primary heat source.

ThermoMite™ Components:

ThermoMite™ Pouches

Our ThermoMite™ pouches are a truly innovative leap forward in Varroa control. They feature a bespoke PCM solution, which has been optimized in such a way that it is able to heat the brood to around 38 – 45°C. Thus achieving the perfect balance between temperatures high enough to affect the Varroa, but not so high as to negatively impact the bee colony or brood.

The PCM solution within the pouches is charged by boiling in water, once the pouches have been melted to a clear liquid and cool to room temperature they enter a super-cooled state. This scientific term simply means the pouch is fully charged and ready to use, very much like charging a battery in your phone or laptop. In order to activate the pouch all that is required is to push / click the metal switch inside the pouch. Once the switch has been activated, it starts an immediate chemical reaction within the pouches and heats them to around 55°C. Our pouches are rated for 150+ recharge cycles. A standard national hive brood box should require between 4 - 6 ThermoMite™ pouches.

ThermoMite™ Inner-Board

Our revolutionary Inner Board features a bespoke thermal reflective layer. This inner board is designed to reflect heat back into the hive and helps eliminate thermal losses. It is a crucial part of the system and allows for even heat distribution around the brood.

ThermoMite™ Permanent Floor:

Our ThermoMite™ Permanent Floor is capable of replacing your permanent hive floor setup and features the same bespoke thermal reflective layer as our inner board. This layer pushes the heat from the pouches upwards into the brood / hive. Our permanent floor is also designed with a removable plastic insert, which can be left in place during normal hive operation and stops the bees from filling out the bottom floor.

During ThermoMite™ treatment this plastic insert is removed and the in-built draw system allows for the easy application of our ThermoMite™ pouches.

ThermoMite™ Drawer:

Our ThermoMite™ Drawer is designed as a highly retro-fittable device and can be easily applied / removed to multiple hives. It also features the same bespoke thermal reflective layer as our inner board and permanent floor. Another key feature are the two adjustable air-vents built into the magnetic front panel of our drawer. These vents allow for complete manual control over both air-quality and temperature inside the brood / hive.

The system offers great flexibility to use one ThermoMite™ setup on multiple hives, hence saving significant costs and offering improved payback times.

We advise removing any open mesh floors from your hive before and during treatment, as this can significantly block the heat rising through the hive and result in ineffective treatment.

ThermoMite™ Cover:

Our ThermoMite™ cover features a bespoke fabric PVC material, which acts as both a thermal insulating barrier, but also as a radiant solar thermal collector. The unique design of this cover allows for solar thermal heat to be gently applied to the hive and in real world testing has been shown to significantly boost the overall thermal performance of the ThermoMite™ system. The cover is highly effective when treating in lower ambient temperatures. It also acts as an effective wind break, helping to avoid and minimise sudden temperature fluctuations within the hive, hence significantly lowering the risk of thermal stress to the bees within. We highly recommend the use of our ThermoMite cover during treatment, as it can be seen to offer a significant boost to the overall system performance.

ThermoMite™ cover is made from High Strength 510gsm PVC Fabric. Suitable for outdoor weather environments.

All ThermoMite™ beehive components are made from high quality British and Canadian Cedar & Birch.
